Urban Legends of New Hampshire

New Hampshire, where Ray Montie lives with his family, is home to its fair share of myths and legends. Here are a few of the most famous.

Raymond Montie

Chocorua’s Curse

This legend says that a Native American chief named Chocorua befriended a white man and left his son in the man’s care. He left on a journey and returned to find his son had died in a terrible accident while he was away. In his grief, he killed the white man’s family as revenge, beginning a bitter and ultimately fatal battle between the two men. The quest for vengeance ended when the white man pursued Chocorua to the edge of a ravine where, rather than surrender, Chocorua threw himself off the ledge. As he fell to his death, he uttered a powerful curse—one that some say lasts to this day and is responsible for the many strange sightings and occurrences on the mountain where Chocorua died and which now bears his name.

Chase House

This building in Portsmouth was an orphanage in the 1800s, and many say the suffering that went on within its walls left behind a hotbed of paranormal activity. In particular, it is said that one of the orphanage’s residents took her own life out of despair, and her screams and cries are among the others some say can still be heard emanating from the walls of the Colonial-style house.

Cocheco Mills

In Dover, one can see a sprawling brick building that is now home to offices and apartments. However, it began as the site of Cocheco Mills. Well before the era of labor laws, mill work was miserable indeed, and workers toiled for long, grueling hours in cramped and dangerous conditions. Then, in 1906, the entire complex burned down, and due to lack of safety precautions, many workers lost their lives, trapped inside. Even though the buildings were rebuilt and completely refurbished, many employees and residents report ghostly activity, and the sounds of old mill equipment running are described by many who have lived or worked in the old mill. It seems some of those who suffered and died in the era of industrial greed have not found their way out of the place of their torment.

Wood Devils

New Hampshire is home to a few distinct cryptids, and the wood devils are some of the most famous. These creatures are said to be akin to the legendary Bigfoot or Sasquatch, though those who claim to have seem them report that they are much lighter, swifter, and more graceful as they run through the woods. These elusive creatures are mainly seen in the far north of New Hampshire, right along the Canadian border. They are described as being about seven feet tall, lean and muscular, and covered in light grey fur.

Devil Monkeys

Another cryptid native to the New Hampshire area, and some might argue a more terrifying one, is the Devil Monkey. No one is sure whether there is only one or several of these creatures, but all those who have witnessed it have been horrified by the unearthly howling sounds the Devil Monkey is said to make. Its appearance is no less frightening, and it is said to have the body of a primate, the snout of a dog, and rows or razor-sharp teeth. Sightings of this creature go all the way back to the 1950s, and as recently as 2001, a group of people reported seeing the Devil Monkey in the Danville area.

Eunice Cole

One of New Hampshire’s oldest supernatural legends stretches back to well before the founding of the United States. New Hampshire was not immune from the witchcraft hysteria that swept through New England at the time, turning neighbor against neighbor and condemning many innocent women to torture and death.

One of these women was Goodwife Eunice Cole, who was tried for witchcraft in 1656. In 1670, she was released and allowed to return to Hampton, only to be persecuted yet again and forced to suffer through another trial. Eunice Cole was one of the few women to ever be found innocent of witchcraft charges, but it did her little good. Ostracized by the community, she was forced to live alone in the forest and subsist on wild berries. Many feel that several Hampton tragedies—including a shipwreck that killed eight people—can be attributed to her vengeance. And there could be some truth to their claims. In 1983, after the city of Hampton formally exonerated Eunice Cole and erected a proper tombstone, the attacks reportedly stopped. Eunice Cole’s spirit is still present according to some, just in a much less harmful form.

The Smuttynose Murders

Alongside its ghostly occurrences, New Hampshire has its share of true crime tales. The most famous happened in 1873, when two Norwegian women were murdered with an ax on Smuttynose Island. A third woman escaped to tell the tale, and a man was eventually convicted of the crime. However, there have always been alternate theories surrounding the incident, and many are not sure justice was served. The woman who escaped as well as her husband have been named as suspects, among others. This crime and its aftermath inspired the novel The Weight of Water.

What could it be about the small state of New Hampshire that causes so much paranormal activity to be witnessed in such a concentrated area? The state is no stranger to pain and strife, from the witchcraft era to the brutalities of industrialization and beyond.

Will Ray Montie and his family have a close encounter with a ghost or cryptid?
