Chocorua’s Curse
This legend says that a Native American chief named Chocorua befriended a white man and left his son in the man’s care. He left on a journey and returned to find his son had died in a terrible accident while he was away. In his grief, he killed the white man’s family as revenge, beginning a bitter and ultimately fatal battle between the two men. The quest for vengeance ended when the white man pursued Chocorua to the edge of a ravine where, rather than surrender, Chocorua threw himself off the ledge. As he fell to his death, he uttered a powerful curse—one that some say lasts to this day and is responsible for the many strange sightings and occurrences on the mountain where Chocorua died and which now bears his name.
